Description
Ben Smith and his wife, Ethel, who lived in the Fayetteville/Springdale area in the Ozarks on the border of Missouri and Arkansas, made dolls and other souvenir items in the late 1940s which were sold locally and by mail order. The Smiths’ son Lavon helped with the souvenir business while attending the University of Arkansas, where he studied art.You can add 2 Ozark dolls to your collection of American folk art by accepting this offer:
Aunt Peachy is 9" tall. In addition to her hickory nut head she has a wooden body, legs and hands.
I do not know the name of the 6 1/2" knitting Ozark doll. She also has the signature hickory nut head. Her body seems to be some sort of stuffing and her legs appear to be an old style of pipe cleaner.
The hair on the back of the head of Aunt Peachy thin. There are 2 little rust mark from a pin in the hat of the knitting nut head doll. The white on the clothing of the knitting nut head doll has yellowed some from time. There is a pin holding the "Aunt Peachy, Ozark Doll" tag at the bottom of Aunt Peachy's dress.
